To be obsessed with anything is probably a waste of time. To be obsessed with Steampunk is definitely a waste of time. I don't really understand the fascination with steam-powered retro-futuristic things. They look moderately cool, but to have a subculture? I'm not saying it's ugly, I just don't get the obsession. In fact, I really liked the steampunk guitar that guy in the video made. However, if he spent the time learning guitar that he speant going to steampunk conventions, he'd be a virtusso by now.

I disagree. I'm not into retro-futuristic steam-powered steampunk things either, but if I were, it wouldn't be a waste of time. It would be fun to have that strange community.
ReplyDeleteI mean, i don't think its a waste of time if you derive pleasure from doing so. Perhaps the dude really valued his time creating, to him, what might be a piece of "art". It's a hobby like any other hobbies innit? Today our hobbies are Facebooking, video games and texting. I don't think we can say ours are any better
ReplyDeleteI agree with Angela--It's obviously he enjoyed making the guitar into an art project more than he enjoyed playing it. we don't have to pigeon-hole accomplishment into specific categories.
ReplyDeleteHate to jump on the band wagon, but it seems to me like this obsession is a lot more productive than many people have whether they are aware of it or not. Though I dont consider mine to be one, some personalities have greater tendencies to latch onto things so I can dig it.
